Whitehill Online - Local History
Welcome
to In Years Gone Bye, the new local history feature on Whitehill Online.
This feature has hopefully been designed to make local history more
appealing to a wider audience and to encourage user interaction, which
is key to the success of any community driven website.
Each month we are going to look at a chosen year and report what was
happing in the local news during this period. Most of the stories will
be local, however hopefully we will also try and through in a few interesting
facts and statistics which happened in this year.
Kicking off the first in the new series we are going to look at the year
1994. Stories making the news this year are;;
-
Tony Blaze (Water Worker) at the Harecastle Tunnel in Kidsgrove gets
his new hut which includes a toilet. This puts to an end years of
crossing his legs and only having a bucket for emergencies.
-
British Rail installed a station manager in Kidsgrove, because they
claimed that staff cuts had lead to increased vandalism. It was hailed
a "step in the right direction at the time".
-
Thousands of commuters have been given a reprieve from a road resurfacing
project. The highway along Congleton Road at Butt Lane was due to
be dug up by British Gas, but the plans have now been scraped.
-
The last train from Manchester to Stoke stopped serving Kidsgrove
in this year. British Rail claimed that too few people were using
the service. The situation was reviewed but to no avail.
If you have any more memories, stories and/or comments on any of the
stories raised here please visit our special forum
board where we would love to read your feedback.
