Kidsgrove Gets Brown Garden Recycling Bins
ControversialThe introduction of these bins is quite controversial as many local residents have told Whitehill Online that they would rather see a plastic recycling facility provided, something which Newcastle Borough Council refuses to accept. It also has to be questioned how successful such a garden waste collection will be, considering that Newcastle Borough Council already encourages and provides free green garden waste composting bins. Collection InformationIt is believed that the collection date for the brown garden waste bins will be a Tuesday, on a fortnightly basis. Once collections commence it will be crucial to ensure that no recyclable garden waste is placed in the existing grey general refuse bin, otherwise the collectors will refuse to empty it. The real question of course is how much is all this going to cost? The simple answer to this is that we don’t know, however the more cynical will be expecting to pay for this service in our next Council tax bills. The Council will be hoping that this collection service will enable it to achieve its 15% recycling target, something which will enable it to apply for Government grants. Past FailingsNewcastle Borough Council however has a very poor record when it comes to meeting waste targets, every year failing to meet the expected Government set targets. This failure of the past years could have cost the Newcastle tax payer over £2millon extra! Judging by past failures on recycling by Newcastle Borough Council, it is fair that we adopt a fairly sceptical view. We hope to be proved wrong, however Whitehill Online believes that until the Council tackles the real issue of plastic recycling, nothing will change significantly What’s your view on this story and other local issues?
